Klarna Pay Later recurring payments – CCD2

Learn about how Klarna handles Klarna Pay Later recurring payments post 20th November 2026 and what that might mean for your business.

In short

New EU consumer credit rules (CCD2) apply from 20 November 2026. They change how Klarna approves credit for recurring and subscription charges. Klarna will handle agreement updates directly with your shoppers and you don't need to make any technical changes.

What's changing

CCD2 (the revised EU Consumer Credit Directive) extends consumer credit rules to short-term, low-cost credit — including buy now, pay later. From 20 November 2026, credit used for recurring or subscription charges needs a credit agreement that meets the new requirements.

Klarna is updating these agreements directly with shoppers. This happens in Klarna's own flows, outside your checkout.

What this means for your store

  • No technical work required. No API changes, no new integration, no changes to how you create or charge tokens.

  • Your existing Klarna Pay Later tokens keep working. We expect little to no impact on your ability to charge them.

  • Shopper experience is unchanged at checkout. The change affects the credit agreement behind the scenes.

What happens to a recurring charge after 20 November

  1. If the shopper has signed a new agreement directly with Klarna → the charge goes through on Klarna Pay Later as usual.

  2. If the shopper hasn't signed it → Klarna automatically routes the charge to Klarna Pay Now, using the shopper's saved card or bank account.

  3. If the shopper hasn't signed it and has no saved card or bank account with Klarna → the charge may fail.

Only a small number of shoppers are expected to fall into the third group.

Where this applies: CCD2 is EU directive. This only affects Klarna Pay Later recurring charges in EU countries. Non-EU markets aren't in scope on 20 November 2026.

What we suggest you do

Klarna is working to keep disruption to a minimum, but it's worth reviewing your failed payments flow before 20 November — how you're notified, how you retry, and how you contact the shopper.

If you run subscriptions at volume, keep an eye on your failed payment rate in the weeks after 20 November and let us know if you see anything unexpected.
