Overview
Express buttons let shoppers pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna straight from the top of Kustom Checkout. The shopper uses the details already saved in their wallet or Klarna account, so they do not need to fill in the address form.
Express buttons are part of the checkout itself. You turn them on in the Kustom Portal and they appear in your checkout right away. You do not need to add any code or change your integration.
This article covers express buttons inside Kustom Checkout. If you want to show express buttons on your product page or in your cart, outside the checkout, see the Express button Element section in Elements. The two are set up separately and have different requirements.
Where to find express buttons
Express buttons have their own page under Apps in the Kustom Portal. The page is separate from Elements, so changes you make here only affect the buttons inside your checkout. Each store has its own settings, so you start by choosing which store you want to work with.
Log in to the Kustom Portal.
In the left-hand menu, click Apps and then click Express buttons.
Select your store in the Stores dropdown.
If you do not see Apps in the menu, your user role may not have access. Ask an Admin on your store to check your access.
Available express buttons
The express buttons you can use are listed at the top of the page. Each one has a toggle so you can turn it on or off yourself.
If a button is listed under Not switched on and has a lock icon, the payment method behind it is not active for your store. Contact our support team to have it switched on. Once the payment method is active, you can turn on its express button like the others.
How to turn express buttons on or off
You decide which express buttons are shown and the order they are shown in. You can make one setting that applies everywhere and separate settings for specific countries, which are explained in the next section. Your changes are not applied until you save them, and you can check the result in the preview before you do.
Go to Apps > Express buttons and select your store.
In the Setting for dropdown, choose Default or the country you want to change.
Use the toggle next to each button to turn it on or off.
Drag the buttons by the handle on the left to change the order they are shown in. The button at the top of the list is shown first in the checkout.
Click Save changes.
The Preview on the right shows how the express section will look in your checkout. You can switch between the mobile and desktop view at the bottom of the preview. Under the settings you can also see who last changed them and when.
Default and country settings
The Default setting applies to every country that does not have its own setting.
If you want different buttons or a different order in a specific country, click Add country in the top-right corner and choose the country. That country then gets its own setting, which you can find in the Setting for dropdown.
A country with its own setting does not follow the Default setting. If you change the Default setting and nothing changes in your checkout, check if the country you are testing has its own setting in the Setting for dropdown. Select that country and make your changes there.
What the shopper sees
When express buttons are turned on, they are shown at the top of the checkout under the heading Express checkout. The rest of the checkout follows below under Or continue below, so shoppers can still fill in their details and choose any payment method as usual.
When the shopper clicks an express button, they confirm the purchase in Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna with their saved details.
The Klarna express button
The Klarna express button is shown as Pay with Klarna. It lets shoppers pay with the details saved in their Klarna account, so their information is filled in for them.
When the shopper clicks the button, they complete the whole purchase in Klarna's secure express flow. They do not return to Kustom Checkout to finish the order.
Example of the Klarna express flow
Turning off the Klarna express button does not remove Klarna from your checkout. Klarna is still available as a payment method further down in the checkout.
When express buttons are not shown
Express buttons are only shown when they make the purchase faster for the shopper. They are not shown in the following cases:
Your checkout uses Kustom Shipping Assistant (KSA).
The shopper's device or browser does not support the wallet. For example, Apple Pay is only shown on supported Apple devices and browsers.
The shopper has already filled in the address form or their details have been prefilled.
Your checkout uses mandatory checkboxes or shopper verification such as age verification with BankID.
Your checkout uses the
shipping_option_update,address_updateorcountry_changecallbacks.You are integrated with the Mobile App SDK for native iOS or Android apps.
The shopper is using the Firefox browser.
This means a shopper might see fewer buttons than you have turned on, or none at all. The payment methods themselves are still available further down in the checkout.
Shipping and express buttons
Express buttons in the checkout use the shipping options you send in your checkout order. If you show shipping options through a separate shipping widget on the same page, contact our support team before you turn on express buttons. The shipping choice and the express purchase can otherwise get out of sync.
Frequently asked questions
I turned off express buttons but they still show in my checkout
Check if the country you are testing has its own setting. Open the Setting for dropdown, select that country and turn the buttons off there. Then click Save changes.
I turned on express buttons but they do not show in my checkout
First check that you saved your changes for the right country in the Setting for dropdown. Then check the cases listed under When express buttons are not shown. The most common reason is that the checkout uses Kustom Shipping Assistant, mandatory checkboxes or shopper verification.
Does turning off an express button remove the payment method?
No. Turning off an express button only removes the button from the top of the checkout. The payment method is still available to shoppers further down in the checkout. If you want to remove a payment method completely, contact our support team.
Why is an express button locked?
A locked button means the payment method behind it is not active for your store. Contact our support team to have it switched on. After that you can turn on the express button yourself.
What is the difference between these express buttons and the Express button Element?
The express buttons in this article are shown inside Kustom Checkout and need no implementation. The Express button Element is a piece of code you add to your own website, for example on a product page or in the cart, so shoppers can buy before they reach the checkout. The Express button Element requires Kustom Shipping Assistant, while the express buttons in the checkout are not shown when Kustom Shipping Assistant is used. You set up the Element under Apps > Elements. Read more in Elements or in the developer docs for On-site Express Buttons.
