2. App usage

Download the app

The app can be found on the App Store for iPhone as "Kustom point of sale" — download it from there and on Play store for Androids under "Kustom" - download it from here. Make sure you have updated your iPhone to the latest version as Tap to Pay may require it.

App onboarding & setup

The first time you open the app you will be guided through a short setup tutorial with the main steps to make you purchase ready:

  • Select a merchant

  • Enable & pick a location

  • Select and open a cash register

  • Enable a reader connection with Tap to Pay

Quick connect

If you are trying to make a purchase but haven't got a cash register open or a reader connection established with Tap to Pay or a terminal, you will be prompted when starting the payment to quickly get purchase ready. Open the cash register with the drawer and click the reader connection to get a green light on both and proceed.

Note: You need to have passcode or Face ID enabled on your iPhone per Apple security policy requirements to use Tap to Pay. Terminal connection is made for customers using physical terminals that are in closed pilot for selected SE merchants.

Open your cash register

A cash register needs to be open to start transacting. You can open the cash register from the settings. Only one user and device can operate a cash register at a time. If you need to switch, close the current cash register that another user is operating and open it again to claim it.

Take purchases (Tap to Pay)

If you haven't configured your own products and catalog yet, you will see a Test Product in the MPOS app that you can use to try out the purchase flow.

  • Build a cart from the Sale menu by pressing products from your catalog and proceed to payment by pressing the cart symbol or Payment button. Alternatively use the barcode scanning feature to scan products and build the cart.

  • On the payment screen, select Tap to Pay on iPhone. Then allow the shopper to tap their card or wallet on your screen.

  • Add discounts on the cart screen at the item level or for the entire cart by entering a percentage or amount to be discounted.

  • Once payment is confirmed, send a digital receipt to the shopper's email — either by having them scan the QR code or by manually entering their email address using the "Send receipt" button.

  • MPOS orders with Tap to Pay will be auto-captured by Kustom.

Note: The NFC reader sits on the top of your phone so have shoppers tap there to successfully complete the payment. Tap to Pay also supports transactions that require PIN — this will trigger automatically when required.

Free amount

If you don't have a product catalog uploaded or need to customize a sale quickly, the app supports a free amount option similar to a standalone terminal.

  • Press the free amount button on the Sale page.

  • Input the sale amount.

  • Add a description to the sale if needed — this will be displayed on the receipt and in reporting. By default these sales are tagged with the product name "General Goods and Services" if you don't input a description.

  • Add a MOMS (VAT) rate. By default 25% is selected.

Note: If you need reliable reporting and SKU reconciliation, we recommend uploading a product catalog and not using the free amount.

Scan to pay

As a second payment method, the app also offers Scan to Pay — a QR code-based payment flow where shoppers can select Klarna and Swish as payment methods.

  • After the cart is built or you have entered the payment amount, press the "Scan to pay" button on the payment screen.

  • This triggers a QR code on your device that the shopper can scan, taking them to a hosted payment page.

  • Here they can select their intended payment method and complete the purchase on their own phone.

  • At the end of the flow they will be shown a receipt that they can download as a printed PDF or send to their email.

  • On your MPOS app you will see the success screen and can trigger a receipt from there as well if needed.

Barcode scanning

You can use the iPhone camera to scan items and build the cart. If you have added EAN codes correctly on your products, scanning will automatically populate the cart with the correct item. If the product hasn't been added yet, you will be offered the option to quick-add it using the scanned EAN code.

Press the barcode symbol on the lower left of the Sale page to trigger barcode scanning.

Product search

The MPOS app includes a product search feature that makes it easier to find items and build a cart — especially useful for stores with large product catalogs.

To search for a product:

  1. Start a new sale.

  2. Tap the search bar at the top of the product catalog.

  3. Type the product name, SKU, or reference.

  4. Select the product from the results to add it to the cart.

You can continue searching and adding items before proceeding to payment.

Requirements:

  • Product search is available on the latest version of the Kustom MPOS app.

  • Your product catalog must be set up in the portal. If your catalog is not yet configured, contact Kustom support via the chat icon in the portal.

Product categories

If your catalog has more than ~20 products, switching to Category mode makes the Sale page faster to navigate. Instead of scrolling through every product, you tap a category first (e.g. Drinks, Pastries, Merch) and then the product inside it. Setup is done by applying categories when you upload products.

To switch: Tap the grid icon in the top left of the Sale page. The icon toggles between Product mode (cards of all products) and Category mode (categories first, then products).

Quick add products

If you need to quickly add several products and items to the cart, use the quick add feature:

  • Go to the cart page from the Sale menu on the top right corner.

  • Press the + symbol and input the product data.

  • Add one or several items.

  • Press the Payment button.

Refunds & returns

  • Go to the Orders view in the app.

  • Shoppers can supply their order reference or receipt number for you to identify the order to refund.

  • Click and select the order you want to refund from the list.

  • Press Refund — the refund will be processed instantly to the same payment method the shopper used for the original purchase.

  • You can then click on the refund order and transaction from the same view to issue a refund receipt if requested.

  • Refunds will show as negative amounts in the Orders view.

Refunds for MPOS orders can also be done via the Portal but we recommend doing them from the app if the return happened in store, as the refund will then be logged in the cash register as per cash register regulation.

Note: Only MPOS orders and transactions will show here. eCom/online orders can be seen in the portal on the Orders tab. Only full refunds are supported today in the MPOS app.

Close the cash register

You can close the cash register in the app settings. This generates an end-of-day report (Z-report) — a summary of all transactions and receipts from when the cash register was opened until it was closed. Make sure to close your cash registers at the end of each sales day when you close shop.
